Interactive resource

“Thing 10″ for the MSc module Theory and evaluation of eLearning:

The Fraction Sense Gizmo

Age has not diminished its beauty

It’s almost four years ago to the day since I reviewed the Fraction Sense Gizmo. I still consider this resource a triumph of simplicity, in function and form. Gizmos are a product of Explorelearning who developed the original concept. They are aimed at supporting primary and secondary school children in grasping ideas that may be considered abstract in nature.

The Fraction Sense Gizmo video guide gives a good introduction to the concepts that can be explained, together with a demonstration of these concepts. In this case a particularly neat piece of interactive visualisation is used to show the meaning of a fraction’s denominator and numerator components, giving an immediate picture of what a fraction represents.

If you’ve struggled with fractions all your life click on the image below. This will give you five minutes “play time” (renewed daily) to try the Gizmo.

Does it work for you?
